Chapter Fifteen

“He’s gone,” Arthur announced the moment I woke the next morning. He’d been waiting on the bedside cabinet but bounced onto the covers and scurried into my arm tattoo before my consciousness got itself fully going. “You should’ve listened to me.”

Should have listened to my misgivings, more like. With reluctance, I threw back the covers and staggered into the backyard armed with an umbrella to check out the situation.

“Look at that rope,” Arthur howled in disgust, jumping down to the grass and taking an accusatory stance near the frayed end. “He must’ve bit straight through it.”

Gnawed at it for hours was a closer approximation. The straggling end was wet with saliva and flecks of blood. Either the last remnants of Vincent’s donation or the job had taken a toll on Rufus’s gums.

“The police won’t look kindly on you releasing a rabid animal into the suburbs of Christchurch,” Arthur lamented. His words would have held more sway if there hadn’t been so much joy piling in behind them. “Don’t come crying to me if—”

“Hello, boy,” I interrupted, greeting Rufus as he sloped out of the shed. His morning yawn was so wide, his head resembled a Tupperware container with the lid pried off. “How ‘bout you stay back, yeah?”

The dog ignored me, jogging over to sniff at my slippered feet, then snuffling along the trail that led to Arthur. The lizard darted into the air, hovering well out of reach.

“Why’d you bite through the rope if you were staying, eh?” I coiled the discarded length over my arm and threw it back in the shed, amazed at how much the blankets and pillow now resembled a bed. “Can I take the end off your collar, too?”

Rufus lay down on the mossy path, settling his head on his front paws and closing his eyes. With shaking hands, I approached him and unknotted the short stump of rope, breathing a sigh of relief as it came away and I could back up, still in one piece.

“How often are you meant to feed dogs?” I asked Arthur, who had fluttered to the shelter of the back porch.

“Do I look like google? Why don’t you ask Luella? She’s the pet whisperer.” He disappeared inside and I heard the slam as the breadbin lid rolled down.

“You’re making friends all over the place.”

The dog panted, looking for all the world like he was laughing, and I couldn’t resist patting him.

“How about you stay out here in the sun while I research some basic care instructions?”

Rufus acceded to the request, rolling over to scratch his back against the uneven bricks of the path before flipping back over and snapping at a dew encrusted spiderweb.

“How’s my favourite lizard doing?” I asked when back indoors, sliding the breadbin door up an inch to peer inside. “Don’t you want to sit on the laptop to warm up while I’m searching?”

“No,” Arthur snapped, slamming the door shut again.

Without food to bribe him, I was out of ideas. If I wanted my familiar back on an even keel, my best course of action was to evict Rufus as soon as possible.
